This week during class we talked about what music means to me, and the effect it has on my life. In class my answer was, music is what I use as an everyday item because I wake up to it as my alarm, I drive to school with it, walk to class with it, drive home with it, do homework with it, and fall sleep to it. Music is around me everyday, all day.
I’m sure this is a simple answer and is the same as most people. However I want expand on this and talk about how I ended up liking and listening to the music I do today. I started off as almost every younger kid does, which is listening to the music your parents do. For most kids in my opinion, they end up liking the same music as there parents when they are young. Although, for me, I hated the music my parents played especially my dads. Because of this when I got a little older and they would let me play the music I liked I would purposely put on the music my dad hated, I guess it was sort of revenge for him playing music I didn’t like, and for him the music he didn’t like was pop/ hip-hop. This ended up being the music I liked for years.
Fast forward a little to when I was a sophomore in high school I still didn’t like the music my dad played, but that quickly changed when I became friends with some of my best friends today, it turns out that they listened to the same music my dad listened to which was alternative/classic rock. Eventually, the more and more I listened to it the more I could appreciate it and enjoy it. It finally got to the point where I had made a playlist strictly with songs from that genre and in a heartbeat it became my favorite type of music. Now, when I’m in the car with my dad I find myself singing along with him and it even gets to the point where I know more words than he does which is truly saying something.
In the end, music has done a lot for me in my life. It helped me make some of the best friends I have today and will probably have for the rest f my life. Music also helped me in the aspects of family and that it helped me get closer with my dad, and now we have something to bond with and talk about whenever we’re in the car or just in the midst of an awkward silence situation. In general, music has helped all aspects of my life like, school, friends, and family.
This is a great post, and I can relate to it 100%. I think we can all appreciate the overall sound of music.
