There is something so beautiful about the impact music can have on society. How thousands of people can rejoice and mourn all in one place at the same time over the loss of too many.
When we were given a few minutes in class to think about and jot down how music is used today, I thought of how it often brings a community together after a tragic event has taken place. The tragic event that first came to mind was the suicide bombing which occurred at an Ariana Grande concert in 2017 in Manchester, England. The lives of 22 people were taken away in an instant that night, those including children, along with 116 injured.
It is so saddening to hear of incidents such as bombings happening as often as they do, but I am not going to focus on the bombing in particular for this post. I want to talk about an event Ariana hosted a while after, a charity concert in honor of the victims called One Love. All the proceeds would go to the victim’s families to help them pay for injury-related costs. It was not only a painful experience for Ariana (having to be there moments prior and as the bomb went off), the victims and their families but for the people living in surrounding parts of England as well that may not have even known anyone who went to the concert. Among those performing at the charity event (not including Ariana) were Katy Perry, Coldplay, Take That, Justin Bieber and a surprise appearance by Liam Gallagher.
The 22,000 individuals present in Manchester Arena on the night of May 22 had no idea what was coming for them. The fact that music can be even the slightest bit uplifting during a time of complete turmoil speaks for itself. It amazes me. The love of music that was instilled in those 22 innocent lives will live on in us. Music is a truly remarkable form of art.
