In class this week we learned about the history, effects, and insights to the time frame after the devastating 9/11 terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers in New York. During this time period, many artists of all different genres wrote songs to support survivors and families/friends of ones who have passed away or have gotten seriously injured during the terrorist attack. From country, rap, hip-hop, and more; the styles of music all supported the saddened people.
Bruce Springsteen's song "The Rising" was researched this week by my group & I. Although I was very young when this event happened, it really gave me a feel for how people came together. It was nice that he mentioned a sense of unity being built by all of the U.S. citizens. In the song, his mood is very uplifting and empowering which is always good for getting over huge bumps in life hitting you hard. This just goes to show how much music really does play a huge role in society. Weather people realize it or not, music is always something to turn to when you do not know how to handle situations by yourself. From managing stress to dealing with anger and sadness, music will always be there to help someone cope.
After researching the 9/11 event, I am so thankful that I have never had to go through anything like the citizens back then did. Even though I was only about 1 years old, I know that the tragedy of 2001 will effect/has effected my life through our history as well as safety measures taken every day.
This is a blog devoted to the ideas and analysis of BSU students as they discover, listen, read, analyze the works of various musical artists, across various genres, whose music centers on political, social, and/or cultural issues. The ultimate goal of the class, other than focusing on the students' writing skills, is to allow them the space and time to express their own opinions and ideas, to expose them to music that can and has made significant change.
