During the class presentations my favorite presentation was on the song “Rule” by Nas. Everything about the song is incredible, the instrumentals and the lyrics pair together in away that is superb and the hook is phenomenal. It came out about a month after the tragic attacks on our nation's beloved twin towers on 9/11. I think this song speaks to a new level of togetherness throughout the country because anyone can listen to it, with its half rap half singing theme. Meaning if you’re not into it for the rap you're there for the hook and vice versa. The whole song talks about what's currently going on in the world and how it seems like everyone is so full of hate and violence but it's pointless to act like that. Nas illustrates this well when he says “we must stop the killing, Tell me why we die, we all God's children”. Which goes to show that everyone is in a sense related, no matter which god they belong to, what color their skin is, or what ethnicity they are we are all just human beings living our lives. When we start killing each other based off of the previous reasons it's doing nothing but hurting one of our own, another human being. Essentially the song is a prayer and call for hope and positive actions to be taken throughout the world, instead of harming each other we should all work together to achieve a greater goal of peace throughout the world. The message of this song is pretty much a more graphic tell of events with the overall message of come together. Which reminds me of The Beatles song “Come Together” which is about everyone coming together to achieve a higher peace for everyone.
This is a blog devoted to the ideas and analysis of BSU students as they discover, listen, read, analyze the works of various musical artists, across various genres, whose music centers on political, social, and/or cultural issues. The ultimate goal of the class, other than focusing on the students' writing skills, is to allow them the space and time to express their own opinions and ideas, to expose them to music that can and has made significant change.

Good Observation on the Half Rap aspect of this song. It is a good way to outreach both crowds who do and don't like country and for those who do and don't like Rap.
ReplyDeleteI like how you went into the song and showed how it was put out to relate to everyones personal liking of music and how whether you like country or rap you will be able to listen to this song. I also like how you talked about how the message of the song is that we are all just human and if we start killing each other based on past reasoning we will be doing nothing but killing one of our own.
