The Importance of Music and its Message

Growing up, music was one of the biggest influences in my life. Growing up in a religious family, church was a weekly activity we rarely missed out on. At services it was always alive with worship music, and even at a young age it would move me so much.

Moving forward, I found a love for singing and performing musical theatre. There’s just something about singing that makes me feel so whole and thriving. I was always in choruses at school, and got into a cappella as well. Music consumed 90 percent of my life and I loved it.

Towards my Junior year I started looking past the simple rhythms and beats of a song and actually stated to sit down and asses the lyrics that I was actually listening to and songs. I started to look into artists like John legend and Alicia Keys and rappers like to tupac and common and truly started diving into the meanings behind their lyrics and the social issues that they actually touch upon.

The articles we had read last week about 25 powerful moments between music and politics had a reminded me about some pretty iconic moments that actually had helped shape our culture today. Like for example, when Marvin Gaye released that song “What’s Going On”. It fascinated me how that song actually kind of got a dialogue going about the nonsense that was going on with Police Brutality, as well as war issues. As a music and my lyric lover, I truly found this fascinating.

I am hoping  as I continue to grow in this class, I may dig even deeper into the message of certain songs and continue to learn.
