This is a blog devoted to the ideas and analysis of BSU students as they discover, listen, read, analyze the works of various musical artists, across various genres, whose music centers on political, social, and/or cultural issues. The ultimate goal of the class, other than focusing on the students' writing skills, is to allow them the space and time to express their own opinions and ideas, to expose them to music that can and has made significant change.

Star spangled Banner
Last week class discussion on the political and social aspects of music got my attention. As a guy who loves listening to revolutionary music on hiding truths in society, the "Star-spangled Banner" in all its stanza is something that I personally felt that I wouldn't have discovered if it had not been for this class. After class on that very day, I had a soccer game which played that very song before the game. As the song played, all I could think of is I'm a Blackman and the purposed of this song though to bring forth the patriotism of every America, condemns the Negro race of trying to acquire their freedom the only possible way available. This could be one of the many reasons why it is kept secret. Another discussion last week that I thought was interesting was the history of the world, Jim Crow. White imitating blacks by putting on blackfaced which was disturbing. I'm already looking forward to this class because slavery is one of the few topics that interest me.
