In class we began to watch a documentary “What Happened Miss Simone” documentary. about Nina Simone, prior to starting this film I have only heard of her from seeing a quote from her in the syllabus for this class. While we started the documentary I began to learn a lot about Nina and her background. Nina spoke about freedom and how when she performed she felt the feeling of being free. She says “free is a feeling and to her it’s no fear”.
Her name when she was born was Eunice Kathleen Waymon and she was born in Tryon, North Carolina. Nina started practicing as a musician early on when she started playing piano as a child. Nina Simone later in her life studied at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City and then had applied for enrollment at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Simone was denied admission at the Curtis Institute which she assumed was because of her race. Simone says that throughout her life she was isolated which is reflected in her music. After being denied a spot at the institution she applied for a job playing piano at the Midtown Bar & Grill in Atlantic City, New Jersey in 1954. This job would influence her career for the rest of her life. Nina simone had a very recognizable voice which drew many people to her music

I agree with this and also this is written really well. Jordan Aucone
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your post and the facts that you included. I like how you included the schools she studied at and the name of the bar that she started off at.
