This week we watched a documentary on a powerful women that goes by the name of Nina Simone. She was a civil rights enthusiast and has always had this dream to become the first African American pianist. She started her career at a nightclub where she was informed that she needed to sing, along with playing the piano. From there on she became a powerful singer and had a huge impact in the songs she wrote.
I have great respect for this woman because she had to overcome so much and succeeded in making a name for herself. I’ve only listened to one of her songs called “Backlash Blues”. This song exemplifies the civil rights movement by relating real world problems to a possible solution to racism, hence the name Backlash. Her ability to put real world problems into a song makes her song more emotional and attachable for her listeners. With her ability to succeed in music and overcome many difficult obstacles while trying to achieve her own American dream makes her your typical role model during this time.
I definitely agree that Nina Simone was a powerful women and someone people should look up to. She faced a lot of adversity in her life especially was denied the chance to go to her dream school because of her race. I think that she used all the emotions and frustration she felt in to her music to send a message, advocating for civil rights.
