What do they mean?

A few classes ago it was brought to our attention that it is important to understand what time period a piece of music came out in and who wrote it and why. It felt like this was the topic of the class this week. Bob Dylan was the person that we all listened to and many of his songs were protest songs. The songs were also usually published in the 60's and during the 60's so much was happening from slavery, to depression, basically the 1960's was not a good decade. If you truly listened to some of the songs that some people wrote, especially Bob Dylan, you can understand what message they are truly trying to say. You will know this because you understand that the 1960's was not a good time, and people wanted their voices to be heard and they wanted to make a change in the world through their music.
I listened to Bob Dylan's song "The Times They Are A Changin'". I really did not think that this particular song was a protest song. However, it was more of a song telling the older generation that what was happening in the world was not right and that they need to step aside and let the younger generations make the world a better place. It was really a song that I listened to in the eyes of a younger generation and I truly think it is always important to be able to see what different musicians are truly trying to say.

  1. The time period a song was created in can great impact its message as you had mentioned. I also worked on "The Times Are a Changin" for my paper and similarly found that it was centered around the idea of the transition from the beliefs of the older generation to those of the younger. It conveyed Dylan's hopes of society and its structure changing through the young people.
