This week in class, we watched a documentary about labor unions, what work was like early on, etc. To summarize the short film in a sentence, it would be discussing the issues and concerns in the workplace and how things were done when working. I thought the documentary was interesting and it made me understand what happened when working back then.
Why did I find this film interesting? I found this documentary interesting because it taught me how workers were treated, what conditions they worked in and what the process of getting a job was like back then ( even though before the film, I had some type of knowledge on this). During some parts of the film, I felt sorry for the workers during this time. They got paid 35 cents and, if lucky, up to a dollar, which was not enough to support their families. It did not surprise me that sexes were separated and the same with races. All these factors made me realize how difficult it was to have a fulfilling and satisfied life back then.
During this film, I did find certain things that were mentioned to be quite fascinating and took me by surprise. For example, I did not know that there were white indentured servants, I only thought it was African Americans. Another one was the number of people that were waiting for work outside the factories.
To conclude my final thoughts, I also gained a deeper understanding of the working place after listening to Maggie’s Farm covered by Rage Against the Machine. That song went into details about how horrible the workplace was back then but also how the workers just put up with to keep their jobs. The song showed more emotion than the film did in my opinion and that’s why I believe I understood everything that was going on after watching the film and listening to the song.
This is a blog devoted to the ideas and analysis of BSU students as they discover, listen, read, analyze the works of various musical artists, across various genres, whose music centers on political, social, and/or cultural issues. The ultimate goal of the class, other than focusing on the students' writing skills, is to allow them the space and time to express their own opinions and ideas, to expose them to music that can and has made significant change.

I also did not have a full understanding of what life was like for these workers prior to watching this video. It was startling to find out that people worked for only $1 a week. Maggie's Farm gave me a new perspective as well allowing me to grasp the frustration and the way the workers truly felt during this time.
ReplyDeleteThe video also helped me fully understand what life was like for the workers. It amazed me that there was so much oppression i the work place, and gave me a new understanding.
