For my first blog I would like to reflect on the National Anthem and the different songs that carry an important message about this country. While talking about the National Anthem in class we saw different versions sung by different artists. We also saw artists not sing the song but rather play it on the guitar and even without the words it still had the same chilling effect when it was sung by Whitney Houston. I also found out that the National Anthem had four verses and the third verse consisted of language that can be found offensive to descendants of slaves. After reading the stanza I also agree and disapprove of the wording and I feel that it could be changed or even reworded.
In addition to the National Anthem we also listened to other songs that reflect on America such as “Only In America” by Brooks and Dunn which emphasizes the opportunities this country offers to everyone of all races. In the music video it shows people mostly blue collar workers such as construction workers and people working for fish markets. The major theme being expressed in this song is the American dream and that everyone's dream is different and you can't be handed money you have to go out and work for it. Another song we listened to which is more recent is “This is America” by Childish Gambino. This song takes a more aggressive approach as it reflects on things such as gun violence, the precarious state of black bodies, and how we have used entertainment to distract us from persuasive cultural and political problems. Both of these songs reflect whether good or bad what this country provides as well as the major problems this country faces everyday.
