Through the first two weeks, I feel that music representation was an important factor that we went over in class. The Star Spangled Banner, our National Anthem, showed the different ways music can be used and represented. The first example that was shown was the version that Whitney Houston did at the Superbowl. This was my favorite out of the three examples because you could see the effort, the care, and you could feel the importance of the song as she sang it. I feel that Whitney Houston represented the National Anthem with love for the country. The Second Example was the version that Axel Rose played on his guitar at a baseball game. The National Anthem was represented without any words but just the notes and the sound. The third example that was used was the Jimi Hendrix version that he as well played on his guitar at the Woodstock festival. people say and I would agree with them that he played this as a protest to the Vietnam war in which America was involved in at the time. He represented the National Anthem in a harsh way, and I disagree that the Star Spangled banner should be represented in this way.
There were two other songs that were used as representation that we listened to in class. Both of these songs represented America. The first one that we listened to was Only in America by Brooks and Dunn. This song represented America and the beauty that it possess, and also it shows the American dream and people living good lives. The other song was this is America by Childish Gambino. This song represented the Black community and how they have been mistreated on multiple actions. Music is a good way to get your voice out there and make a statement. However there is still a wrong and right way to make a statement.
This is a blog devoted to the ideas and analysis of BSU students as they discover, listen, read, analyze the works of various musical artists, across various genres, whose music centers on political, social, and/or cultural issues. The ultimate goal of the class, other than focusing on the students' writing skills, is to allow them the space and time to express their own opinions and ideas, to expose them to music that can and has made significant change.
