A lot of the music I listen to is because I find their lyrics to be touching. For example, when I was 9-years-old, I remember my cousin showed me a song called "Runaway Love" by Ludacris and Mary J Blige. In the song, Ludacris talks about 3 different little girls that are having issues with the world and their parents. Lisa is a lonely 9-year-old girl who has an alcoholic and drugatic mother who is with a guy that abuses Lisa. Nicole is a 10-years-old girl who also gets abused by her stepfather. Whenever she goes to school teachers ask questions and she always makes excuses. Erica is an 11-year old that gets pregnant by a 16-year-old. As time goes on the baby father bails out and Erica is alone and is afraid to face her mom. All of these girls end up running away from home. The reason I mention this song is that I was around those girls' age in the video so it really caught my attention back then. Because none of those things were happening to me, I did not think they were happening at all. I remember going into school after that song came out and having a completely new perspective of people.
If those stories of those girls were on the news, at the age of 9 I would have not heard it before because I was not watching the news or reading newspapers. But since it was a song, with a touching music video, I was able to see and understand the pain of those girls.
Music travels a lot faster than news. I believe that it is easier for people to hear an artist's message through music rather than the news or a newspaper. I also believe that artists have a lot of fans who support them, so if an artist were to bring up an issue, their fans are most likely to agree/support them even more.
