For my first blog post, I'd like to talk about how music impacts my everyday experiences. Before I joined this class I knew that music had such an impact on me. From the second I get out of bed in the morning to get ready for the day, to the second I hit my bed after a long day, I have music playing whether it's through a speaker, headphones, or my laptop. I enjoy listening to music so much that I am the type of person whose entire mood will change when someone interrupts me with my music. Whether it's my cousin putting the volume all the way down in the car just so she can tell me an hour-long story, or my mom putting down the volume in the car everytime I put it back up because she does not want to hear it, or someone constantly trying to have a conversation with me while I have my headphones in.
I listen to a wide variety of music, but I mostly listen to rap. People think its weird that I am a Haitian girl that can sing all the lyrics to Bachata and Pasada songs. And that black girls don't listen to country music. I grew up in Boston and in Acton so the two different places taught me a lot about different cultures. I do not refuse to listen to different types of music just because "it wont suit me". I do not discriminate music because I believe that music is made to bring people together.
I tend to listen to music to relax. When I get really worked up or stressed out about something I just listen to music and it calms me down. I like the songs I like for the messages the artists give. One of my favorite rappers is 21 Savage and he just released an album called I am > I was. In one of the songs in the album, he says, " I'd rather have loyalty than love cause love don't really mean jack. See love is just a feeling you can love someone but still stab them in the back. It don't take much to love you can love somebody just by being attached. See loyalty is an action you can love or hate me but still have mt back." The first time I heard this part of the song I stepped back and thought about my life, what I was doing wrong, what others were doing wrong to me, what should I be trying to fix? I find a lot of my favorite artist state life changing facts and that is what I live for. I feel like I receive advice that can help me get through whatever I am dealing with from my favorite artists without having to talk to them. I will always have a passion for listening to music, there is nothing I love to do more.
This is a blog devoted to the ideas and analysis of BSU students as they discover, listen, read, analyze the works of various musical artists, across various genres, whose music centers on political, social, and/or cultural issues. The ultimate goal of the class, other than focusing on the students' writing skills, is to allow them the space and time to express their own opinions and ideas, to expose them to music that can and has made significant change.

I really enjoyed reading your post! I relate to this in many ways. A lot of artists include powerful lyrics that I reflect on everyday. I love a variety of music as well and I think that every type of music conveys different messages which I turn to depending on the mood I am in!
ReplyDeleteI really like the way you described that you listen to different types of music and don’t let other people affect that. A lot of people will listen or not listen to something because of the way others feel. I also have listened to certain songs and heard a certain line or verse and it’s made me think hard about life and the choices we make. I really enjoyed reading this and seeing the way music affected your life.
ReplyDeleteI love the perspective you have on music! I think that a lot of people choose to listen to music that is "popular" and known by everyone. I agree that people should listen to the music that they enjoy the most and get the most out of instead of worrying what others think of their taste in music. I agree that music can speak to you and personally it has gotten me through tough times in life.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your post! I can relate to your post because sometimes when I listen to music it also calms me down too. I think it’s awsome that a song was able to make you step back and take a greater look at your life,I think that is very important that you are able to get lessons and advice out if music.
ReplyDeleteNice post. Music uplifts people in many different ways. Music sends messages to different people and they can interpret it many ways.
