Bob Dylan

On Tuesday we were asked to listen to a song of our choice from a given list by Bob Dylan. I never really listened to any Bob Dylan, all I knew was he was a famous musician starting from the mid-late 1900's. For the assignment I decided to listen to a few of his songs to get more familiar with his style of music. I listened to a few songs, like Hard Rain, Blowing in the Wind, Time They are a Changing. But the song written in 1962-1963, Masters of War, really stood out to me. The song targets the government saying how they create these horrible weapons that kill so many people. Mass producing new weapons that kill even more people, and go to war with other countries. However they "Sit back and watch while the death counts get high", saying how they are never in the line of fire or as endangered as the troops they send. The main message of the song is how the government makes other people go and fight, and risk their lives while they sit behind their desks or manufacture more weapons of mass destruction. The reason the song stood out to me was because, I agree with this song, and see where Dylan was coming from with this song. Though the government and politics is not something I care deeply about, I can still see what Bob Dylan refers to, where the government creates these schemes like playing a game of chess, at the expense of others; not risking their own lives.

  1. I love the analogy of the government playing a game of chess the way they create schemes. This is a really powerful song, and also stood out to me.

  2. I like how Dylan accuses the people in power of the destruction being caused, rather than the soldiers who are forced to participate in it for the most part.
