This week in class we learned about and listened to folk singer Bob Dylan. His ride of fame came in the 60s during the civil rights movement and he like to make music with a message. One song that stood out to me was, “The times they are a-changing.” The song is mainly about how America is changing and people need to accept it rather than fight it. He explains this while he sings, “If your time to you/ Is worth savin’/ Then you better start swimmin’/ Or you’ll sink like a stone.”
Bob Dylan also includes politicians to listen to the youth when he says, “Come senators, come congressmen/ Please heed the call/ Don’t stand in the doorway/ Don’t block up the hall/ For he that gets hurt/ Will be he who has stalled/ There’s a battle outside.” Dylan is calling out the government and warning them if they don’t welcome the change that is coming, they will suffer themselves.
Bob Dylan and his songs are still relevant today because, like in this song, he is talking about stuff that is still going on in this country. In this case it is the old generation not accepting the youth and their ideas. If we never accepted change there would be no progress in America. I really enjoyed this song because it motivates the youth to speak up and let their voices be heard.
