So far in class, we have discussed not only the purpose of music, but how society is able to react to it. For example, we looked at a quote by Plato where he thinks that music can be dangerous to society as a whole. This may be true on some levels, as it can concern the government and higher up officials, but I think it can really help the people of the world. We talked about how music can get people through tough times in their lives, motivate them to live more efficient lives and overall be happier people. Music is a way for the public to express themselves and find a way to relate to others and not feel alone in their situation, no matter what it is.
However, music can really have a huge impact on society. We discussed how folk singers sang about social justice and helped to create movements to solve these problems of society and to make the world a better place for everyone. Based off of the articles I read for homework, this has been happening all through out history from slaves singing about how horribly they were getting treated to Bob Dylan singing about the Vietnam War to Rage Against the Machine singing about their hardcore political views. Examples of such performers help to get the word out about injustices in the world and let the public know what is happening and what should be changed/ what they can do to change it. Such music, as I've read, started an abundance of movements to help the causes singers mentioned. Music really has the power to bring people together, despite others trying to put them down.
I think so far what we've been discussing in class is important because we are being taught that music is more than just songs and melodies for people's entertainment. It is a tool used for people to get their messages across and to get their ideas heard. Without music, I think the world would be a sad place with a lack of knowing; a piece would be missing. People would be unaware of the serious problems that need to be treated immediately. The world is extremely lucky to have such an outlet to ensure this not only the well being of society, but the wellbeing of the world around us.
This is a blog devoted to the ideas and analysis of BSU students as they discover, listen, read, analyze the works of various musical artists, across various genres, whose music centers on political, social, and/or cultural issues. The ultimate goal of the class, other than focusing on the students' writing skills, is to allow them the space and time to express their own opinions and ideas, to expose them to music that can and has made significant change.

I definitely agree with you about the fact that if music was not around, some things would go without being talked about. Within artists lyrics they are able to tell the stories from not only their perspectives but they get to spread the word for anybody wanting to fight for the same thing/ change the problem. Good job!
