For the group analysis, my group went over Rihanna and Foxy Brown. Both artists with the help of others, changed the way women in the music industry were seen. I will talk about Rihanna in this blog post.
After doing research I learned that she started her career very early. Rihanna was signed to her first record label at the age of 16. She then rapidly became at the top with her single “ Pon De Replay” in 2005. This song put he
r on the charts and gave herself a name. She was seen as a sex symbol, something that was not allowed in the past with women artists.
In 2009 Rihanna was assaulted by her then boyfriend, Chris Brown. This became viral all over the media and she started to get a lot of hate even though she was the victim in the assault. From this, Rihanna came out with the album, Rated R. This album was seen to be more hard and edgy from her recent music tropical music. This album also received backlash because of the new sound she created. The song we analyzed from this album was Hard. This song is about Rihanna addressing all of her haters and saying how she is hard and can conquer anything that comes her way. The music video for this song goes perfectly because it is military themed. This screams strength and perseverance.
All of this goes in hand with today’s artists who sing but speak their minds about things that have happened to them. Women artists like Kesha, and Demi Lovato have made music talking about very personal topics and have been praised and criticized for it. All musicians are humans who have a right to speak their minds, but the backlash is always stronger when the musician is a minority. Women in the industry are constantly getting bashed for being outspoken with their sexuality but are told that the only way to make it is if they showcase their sexuality. Everything is a double standard. We are supposed to have a free speech but get slandered for when we use it. Real fans should appreciate how hard it was to have them be so open to the world, instead of only focusing on the change of sound.
Oh yeah you guys was my favorite group. I enjoyed both songs as well. I agree with most of the stuff you said as well. Most of female artist do get criticized for the kind of music they make but it's so unfair as well.
