Sara Bareilles Bio + Recommendations

One of my favorite musicians is Sara Bareilles.

Sara Bareilles was born in 1979 in Eureka, California. Throughout her primary and secondary education she participated in various choral groups and her school's theatre productions.

After finishing high school, Bareilles studied communication studies at University of California, Los Angeles. While at UCLA, she joined a co-ed a Cappella group where she debuted her song "Gravity," which she would later record on her solo album.

Once she graduated from UCLA, Bareilles began to create a following by performing in small bars and clubs.

Two years after graduating from college, Bareilles wrote and released her first solo album, "Careful Confessions."

Three years after "Careful Confessions" was released, her latest single, "Love Song" raised to prominence. Bareilles appeared on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," as well as, "The Today Show" to perform the song. The song launched Bareilles' career into the music business. The full album, "Little Voice," reached the coveted platinum status as of 2010.

Since then, Bareilles has released four other albums: "Kaleidoscope Heart," "Once Upon Another Time EP," "Blessed Unrest," and concept album, "What's Inside: Songs from Waitress." Waitress is the title of the musical that Bareilles composed from the movie of the same title. Waitress has been running on Broadway for the past three years, with one run of Bareilles as the lead role.

Bareilles has written many songs about empowerment, and is worth a listen!

Empowering Sara Bareilles Song Recommendations:
  • "Love Song" - about her record label pressuring her to write a love song like other female musicians
  • "King of Anything" - Bareilles not being a damsel in distress as well as mansplaining
  • "Brave" - standing up for yourself against bullying
  • "Fairytale" - princesses don't not always have their lives together and how "princes" aren't always great partners
  • "Bottle It Up" - understanding the importance of being true to yourself
  • "Machine Gun" - look past the haters
  • "Little Black Dress" - if someone drags you down, you can pick yourself back up
  • "Hercules" - you can rely on your own strength
  • "Say You’re Sorry" - when something isn't your fault, you are owed an apology
