Yesterday, 10/18/2018, in class, we spoke about 9/ll both as an event, and how it impacted music during the time. My group and I covered the song "Hey Ma", by James, an upbeat sounding song with extremely sad and dark lyrics. In the song, people being carried home in body bags, dust in the air from the fallen towers, and war are mentioned in the song: "Now, the towers have fallen So much dust in the air It affected your vision Couldn't see yourself clear" , "War, war, war, war." The repetitiveness of the lyrics in the song emphasize them.
The fact that artists were coming out with songs about the tragedy and their showcase's of empathy in their songs, said a lot about the strength of America and it's ability to bounce back. After the event, the country was greatly changed forever. Society changed drastically in terms of security and letting its guard down.
Speaking of 9/11 in class and seeing photos/ videos from the day helped me remember just how awful the day was and all the lives that were lost. Even in a time of despair, people still made music and were able to support victims/ bring a little positivity to America.
This is a blog devoted to the ideas and analysis of BSU students as they discover, listen, read, analyze the works of various musical artists, across various genres, whose music centers on political, social, and/or cultural issues. The ultimate goal of the class, other than focusing on the students' writing skills, is to allow them the space and time to express their own opinions and ideas, to expose them to music that can and has made significant change.

That little bit of positivity was what got us through this awful event as a country.
