Born in the USA written by Bob Dylan was written in 1984. It was one of the most popular songs of the time selling more than 10 million copies. The song is very well known as a patriotic and “Go America” type of song. But the song has been widely misunderstood by many. I feel and many other do as well that it is an anti-war song that is meant to bring the reality of all the people going into war not really knowing what they are actually getting themselves into. They go into war hoping to protect their country and end up injured, killed, or with many scarring memories. “Got in a little hometown jam So they put a rifle in my hand Sent me off to a foreign land”. These lines represent my point I just discussed. The line “Born in the USA” is very contradicting. When many think of America they think freedom, the American dream, many different things that in fact are not reality. Overall I was brought to reality when I really took the time to analyze the song, I never knew the true meaning.
This is a blog devoted to the ideas and analysis of BSU students as they discover, listen, read, analyze the works of various musical artists, across various genres, whose music centers on political, social, and/or cultural issues. The ultimate goal of the class, other than focusing on the students' writing skills, is to allow them the space and time to express their own opinions and ideas, to expose them to music that can and has made significant change.

Many people probably don't know the true meaning. This song should be analyzed by people more often.
