This is a blog devoted to the ideas and analysis of BSU students as they discover, listen, read, analyze the works of various musical artists, across various genres, whose music centers on political, social, and/or cultural issues. The ultimate goal of the class, other than focusing on the students' writing skills, is to allow them the space and time to express their own opinions and ideas, to expose them to music that can and has made significant change.

9/11/01
This week we focused on songs that were written after the horrifying event that took place on 9/11. We spoke/listened to many songs which were produced with the intent to bring the country together, rise from the ashes, and make a better future. My group had to analyze the song "The Rising" by Bruce Springsteen, which I have never heard before. After listening to the song for the first time, the song really made me realize the state that our country was in. The calm tone of Springsteen's voice, and the lyrics which target the citizens, allows people to connect with the song and understand the message. The song goes through a seemingly ordinary life so that people listening could relate, and then going to talk about the event that occurred, focusing on the darkness that seems to shroud the country, and how sad and fearful the occurrence was. But later Springsteen focuses on how this isn't the end, and the future still holds an endless amount of opportunities to make something beautiful. The chorus throughout the song repeats frequently focusing on unifying the country to "rise up" and continue forward. Overall the song has a very powerful meaning, and I liked it because it had a unifying touch to it, where ordinary people could connect to it, as everyone lost something that day.

I really enjoy how Bruce made this song relatable to everyday citizens before focusing on the event that had just happened. I feel as though this would allow the people listening to feel like they weren't alone in their feelings of fear and sadness, knowing that just about the whole country felt that way too.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great explanation of his song. It was nice working with you on the paper of this topic in class.
