Happening seventeen years ago, 9/11 was an event that devastated America and turned our nation upside down. Americans felt helpless, lost, and confused when two different airplanes crashed into the two world trade centers. Myself, being only a year old at the time, is only ever able to experience what everyone went through at that time when I learn about it in school or ask a family member who remembers more than I do. Recently in class, we have been talking about different songs made around the time 9/11 happened. When listening to the different songs, it makes me think about how amazing it is that so many different artists in so many different genres can all sing about the same thing: peace. From rap to country to folk to r&b, everyone was singing about seeing change in our nation and seeing a time where peace in the world can actually exist. Seeing everyone come together to sing about a topic that our country so desperately needed at the time is so uplifting. Knowing that our country was capable of coming together over this tragic event to inspire people and restore faith is so wholesome to think about to this day.
My group for the project did the song "Rule" by Nas. This song follows the trends that other songs written in 2001 had. He is rapping about all the violence that he has seen around him and what he continues to see every day in This country. He just wants to see a change and see peace for the people rather than so much hate. This song talks about a lot of negative scenes, but he only mentions them because he wants people to remember what has happened so they can change. The song ties in with the happenings of 9/11 because of how he wants the country to come together for this peace. At a time where people felt like their country was in shambles, he sang about everyone standing together for a new beginning.
This is a blog devoted to the ideas and analysis of BSU students as they discover, listen, read, analyze the works of various musical artists, across various genres, whose music centers on political, social, and/or cultural issues. The ultimate goal of the class, other than focusing on the students' writing skills, is to allow them the space and time to express their own opinions and ideas, to expose them to music that can and has made significant change.

I agree with you, I think it's amazing to see many artists creating music about peace from all different genres. I think it's important for a country to stand together and put away the differences. Nice job
ReplyDeleteI love how everyone came together to sing about this tragedy. Your group's song in particular, stood out to me about the unity.
