When we analyzed the song, "Born in the USA" by Bruce Springsteen, I learned so much I had not known before. It was truly eyeopening. I did not know about the sarcastic twist the lyrics played. I, like most people always belted out, "Born in the USA!" as very prideful, energetic and full with excitement when the song came on the radio. Once we went through the each stanza of the song, I began to understand the true meaning of it. The song was about the struggles and suffering that our US veterans face in their lives. Veterans are jobless, homeless, hopeless and suffer with PTSD with symptoms of suicidal thoughts. Bruce Springsteen's chorus sounds extremely prideful and full of energy but in reality once you truly understand the meaning behind the lyrics, he is making fun of America and acting sarcastically about his pride for our country.
This is a blog devoted to the ideas and analysis of BSU students as they discover, listen, read, analyze the works of various musical artists, across various genres, whose music centers on political, social, and/or cultural issues. The ultimate goal of the class, other than focusing on the students' writing skills, is to allow them the space and time to express their own opinions and ideas, to expose them to music that can and has made significant change.
