Born in the USA

There are artists out there who want to send messages in their songs. Some are very blunt about it and others may hide the message. In the see Born in the USA  by Bruce Springsteen, it's very patriotic and  he's very proud to be born here. The message behind it is that he has just gotten home from Vietnam and it's hard to make that transition. He talks about how it's hard to be a veteran coming back home. He's coming back from war to his home country and life should be easier for him and any veteran but it can be harder. He's "born in the USA" and this is his home country so he should feel at home. Looking for a job and finding a place to go is difficult because no one wants to take you in.

He talks about how he was set up for this which isn't far. "Got in a little hometown jam, so they put a rifle in my hand, sent me off to a foreign land." There was the draft back in the day and they didn't have a choice to make their lives like this. Then they come back from it and it's hard to get back on their feet and they have very little help. After being at war he says everything has to be covered up and they can't share what they're going through. It's like that whole part of their lives has to be covered up pretend it didn't happen.

This songs purpose is to make people aware of the struggles and hardships that war vets have to go through and trying to make things easier. Artists giving a message in their music typically have a purpose and a drive behind it and this song does. You're able to tell when a song does or doesn't maybe how it's being sung or the beat. Born in the USA has a very upbeat tune to it and that could make it fun but hearing the message is what's important and what Bruce Springsteen was going for.

  1. I wrote something very similar in my blog post and I agree. I think that it's very rare that people actually get the true message of this song and only pay attention to the catchy tune.
