This week in class, we listened to different songs, one of which being Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA."When we listened to the song "Born in the USA," I was truly shocked at the actual meaning of it. For years, I've always heard it not only on the 4th of July, but at summer cookouts, gatherings and more. Because of this, I always just assumed that it was a patriotic song, but I thought wrong.
Actually paying attention to and analyzing the lyrics showed the song in a whole new light. Springsteen is actually talking about the problems veterans have getting jobs when they come home, but since he sings the chorus with such conviction, it's hard for the listener to grasp this concept. The listener just focuses on "Born in the USA." This shows how a catchy tune can make people completely ignore the message of the song. I think this is very important because this can be an example of ignorance within our society.
This song is also extremely important in exposing the neglect of veterans after they return from war. They dedicate their lives to help fight for our country, yet do not get taken care of when they return home. This song can help people to actually realize that veterans need help and we need to pay more attention to them, especially considering they put their lives on the line for us.
This is a blog devoted to the ideas and analysis of BSU students as they discover, listen, read, analyze the works of various musical artists, across various genres, whose music centers on political, social, and/or cultural issues. The ultimate goal of the class, other than focusing on the students' writing skills, is to allow them the space and time to express their own opinions and ideas, to expose them to music that can and has made significant change.
