Bob Dylan's "Maggie's Farm"

I like the message of Bob Dylan's- Maggie's Farm. The song starts out with Dylan saying: "I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more". Dylan proceeds to say "No I ain't gonna work on Mary's farm no more Well, I wake up in the morning fold my hands and pray for rain". The point of view appears to be a slave from the opening lines. The fact that Dylan touches on subjects like these when writing songs proves how caring of a man he was, as he shows support for those who are less fortunate. Dylan speaks from the mind of a slave saying things like "The way she makes me scrub the floor" and "Well, he puts his cigar out in your face just for kicks" put into perspective things a slave thinks for a reader who has never experienced what the author (Dylan) is talking about. Dylan speaks of random unfair aspects of slavery throughout the song that would anger most people. Throughout the song, Dylan says "I ain't gonna work for Maggie's brother no more" "I ain't gonna work for Maggie's pa no more" "I ain't gonna work for Maggie's ma no more" and finally "I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more" as the concluding line. I like that Dylan spoke about the issue of slavery as he gave people a voice they did not necessarily have for themselves.

  1. I agree with you that Dylan put a lot of care and effort into his songs. It is clear in his messages that he wants to help make a change and give the people of the country what they deserve, which is not the hate they were receiving.
