Miss. Nina Simone

Nina Simones Documentary on Netflix.

There is a terrific documentary on Nina Simone's life and I think its really interesting and educational! The movie involves her upbringing and the trials she faced in everyday life. Eunice Katheen Waymon changed her name to Miss. Nina Simone when she began playing at bars in order to pay the bills in disguise from her mother. Nina's mothers boss and her parish's music teacher got a hold of Nina at a very young age after hearing her perform at their church. They planned to broaden her horizons of becoming a professional pianist by working with and teaching her how to play the piano. Nina had the privilege of studying at The School of Julliard in New York City on funding but did not exceed after a year and a half because of her skin color. That is when she began to play a bars for all hours of the nights to pay the bills. Nina's career bloomed as she was an American singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger and on top of that a very influential activist in the Civil Rights Movement.
